Our beloved Pastor, Rev. Kenneth Scherry retired on June 30, 2008, after faithfully serving in the ministry for over 47 years and serving at Zion for over 11 years. Special services and a reception in celebration of Rev. Scherry and wife Sue's years of ministry were held on June 29th. A special honor, the title of "Pastor Emeritus" was bestowed upon Rev. Scherry that day. We wish Rev. Ken and Sue Scherry all the best!
As we search for a new pastor, we are fortunate to have many capable lay leaders to keep the work and worship of Zion ongoing, along with the help of interim and guest pastors.
Below is a message from January 2008 from Rev. Scherry
"Where there is no vision the people perish" This Old Testament quotation was brought to mind last week as I saw in an interview of a student athlete who was making comments about an upcoming ball game. Repeatedly he said, "We just have to be focused!!" He was making a point that the whole team had to keep their lives on the goal of the game ahead if they were going to win. In a more serious sense we look to the vision or the focus of our own lives. My vision or focus is in the words of the Lord's prayer where we pray, "Thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven..." And the vision is one of loving God, our neighbor and ourselves. At this time of the year when we have celebrated the birth of Christ it is also put in the message of the angels to the shepherds tending their sheep in the pastures outside Bethlehem. That message and many more in Scripture points us toward accepting peace and making peace to all people. Sometimes the United Church of Christ is referred to as a "Just peace Church". I am proud to the pastor of a people who have as their vision a time of peace, hope, and love.
